Pun Intended !

I read this on a website sometime back and had found it quite amusing. (can’t remember the source !)

  1. One to deny that a light bulb needs to be changed
  2. One to attack the patriotism of anyone who says the light bulb needs to be changed.
  3. One to blame Clinton for burning out the light bulb.
  4. One to tell the nations of the world that they are either for changing the light bulb or for darkness.
  5. One to give a billion dollar no-bid contract to haliburton for the newlight bulb.
  6. One to arrange a photograph of bush, dressed as a janitor, standing on a step ladder under the banner: ‘Lightbulb Change Accomplished ‘.
  7. One administration insider to resign and write a book documenting in detail how bush was literally in the dark.
  8. One to viciously smear #7,
  9. One surrogate to campaign on TV and at rallies on how George Bush has had a strong light-bulb-changing policy all along.
  10. Finally, one to confuse Americans about the difference between screwing a light bulb and screwing the country.

I read about this online, and it is really cool. Using this method, a user can shutdown, restart, hibernate, etc. his or her computer, just by sending an email from his or her phone.

To do this, all you will need is Microsoft Outlook which should come with Microsoft Office, which most people have. This will need to be on the computer wish you wish to shutdown.

You can refer to the original source here.

So, this is how you do this:

  1. First, you need the batch files to perform the Shutdown, Hibernate etc. You can write them down yourselves or can download them from here.
  2. Extract them to your C:\ drive so the path to the shutdown batch file is C:\sms_functions\shutdown.bat (Important this is a must the path must be exact) or you can modify the rule once you import it to point to the new destination, it’s your call.
  3. Open up Microsoft Outlook. Make sure that you have already configured it for your email. Now we will need to make it so that Outlook checks your inbox about every minute (1 minute for testing time can be increased if a delayed shutdown is desired). You can do this by going to Tools>Options.
  4. Then click the Mail Setup tab, and afterwards, the Send/Receive button.
  5. Make sure that the Schedule an automatic send/receive every… box is checked, and set the number of minutes to 1. Now you may close all of these dialog boxes.
  6. Now go to Tools>Rules and Alerts… Next click the options button in the upper right hand corner and press the Import Rules button.
  7. Now select the shutdown.rwz file that was found in the zip file named sms_functions that you downloaded (the one taken from the original source).
  8. Now, when you send a message from your phone to your e-mail address with the subject smsshutdown%%, your computer will shutdown.

You can also make your own rule, so that you can use your own batch file, and may specify the phrase you want to trigger the action.

Have a doubt, feel free to ask or you can also refer to the original source.

pod Here is another interesting website that let’s you group and manage your online videos from number of sites.

The main feature of this website is that it lets you share your ‘pods’ through the blog widgets that are available. This is what the creators have to say :

Instead, we give you some tools and a space (it’s called a Pod) to collect videos that matter to you. Videos that you want to show your friends and watch with them. Or videos you want to show a broader community that shares your interests. You decide what’s hot, and what’s not — not 563,000 people with tastes or interests unlike yours.

vod:pod has a rich feature set that is easy to use. You can make your videos public or private; consequently, could see people using it to share home movies, weddings, or travel logs. For others it will be a convenient way to collect and share interesting videos that they find online. The pod videos widget alone is worth the site registration, and the future plans for domain mapping and subscription services make it an interesting choice for anyone looking to monetize their own content.

VodPod.com is an easy to use, free service that allows you to save your favorite videos to “Pods”. There is also a social network to VodPod that allows you to see what is popular in the community and add friends if you want.

Give it a try !

When it comes to bookmarking websites i often mess up and lose some very good links. Often in the pat I was creating the “links[1234…..n].txt” text files, but they usually got mixed up and eventually lost. Also bookmarks were not available to me at all the different places. But while creating this blog I found a new( for me !) way of saving web links. It is Furl It !

“Furl is a free service that saves a personal copy of any page you find on the Web, and lets you find it again instantly by searching your archive of pages. It’s your Personal Web… Each member gets a 5-gigabyte personal archive, large enough to store tens of thousands of pages… When you want to find something again, enter any word or phrase you remember from it… Even if a page has disappeared from the Web and other search engines, you’ll still have a personal copy.”

There are some other choices as well like del.icio.us and Spurl which you can always try.

After signing up on site i have been Furling every page that i want to save with the furl button installed on my browser toolbar. The best part is that even if the web page is changed or removed you will still have your own personal copy stored and you can even check out what other people are saving.

. . . . . my attempts to get organized !!

So here it is . . . . Finally managed to create my own map. Well, it looks nice but still needs some finishing to do. The map basically resembles to the lecture theater of my college ( minus the chairs ! …… coz i still need to figure out a texture for the chairs). But still, it looks neat. The beta(!) version will be out shortly. So, watch this space closely.

For those of you who dont know Hamachi is a Networking software that lets you create and join VPN (Virtual Private Networks). And so u basically have your own private network ( like a LAN ) on the internet.

But still Hamachi hasnt quite worked for me. After wasting 1 day, 2 nights with both of my friends I still need to figure out a way to play Counter Strike by creating my own servers and aliasing others through the VPN network. Well, at least for now i have stopped trying.

In the mean time you can try out Hamachi at “Hamachi.cc”
